US Magnesium, LLC
US Magnesium is a world leader in the production and marketing of primary magnesium products and is the largest primary magnesium producer in North American and one of only a handful in the world outside of China. The Company's operations, encompassing some 80,000 acres, are located on the west side of the Great Salt Lake approximately 50 miles west of Salt Lake City. About 65,000 acres are used directly in a highly energy efficient solar evaporation system where US Magnesium not only produces brine feedstock for the magnesium facility but significantly contributes to the production of nearly one million tons of sodium chloride.
The Company participates in many cooperative efforts on the Great Salt Lake to help with the sustainability of the Lake and its contribution to nature and has donated 16 acres of land on the Northern end of Stansbury Island to provide an interpretive center and access to the Lake for the public.
US Magnesium is a key player in meeting the growth in global demand for magnesium products driven by the need for lightweight, high strength structure components in such end uses as automotive and commercial transportation and the utilization of magnesium to produce metals such as titanium, zirconium, beryllium, etc. The Company also produces a variety of by-products that are essential to the purification of drinking water and wastewater for major municipalities throughout the Western U.S.
The Company operates state-of-art production facilities, which include the highly energy efficient solar evaporation ponds, highly efficiency electrolytic magnesium technology, and a full service cast house which produces a wide variety of magnesium ingot products to demanding specifications.
The magnesium facility was started in 1972 under National Lead and then purchased by AMAX in 1981. AMAX then sold the business to The Renco Group in 1989.
